LaPlante Obituary<br><br>Reverend Robert John LaPlante entered into eternal life on March 31, 2017 at Residence, Elisabeth-Bruyere in Ottawa, Canada at the age of 92. <br>Robert John LaPlante was born October 2, 1924 in Bonne Terre Missouri and lived his childhood in Murphysboro, Illinois. <br><br>Beside his parents, Louis Clarence and Genevieve (Goodman) LaPlante, Father LaPlante was preceded in death by his brothers and sister: Clovis and Mary (Trudt), Chad and Imogene (Golliher), Louis, Jr, and Mary Modesta Fehner. <br><br>He is survived by eight nieces and nephews and a large number of family members who live in the US. <br><br>Fr. LaPlante served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946 and was honorably discharged.<br><br>He was granted both undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering from the University of Illinois. He pursued further studies at the University of Wisconsin, ultimately working at General Electric in New York as an engineer.<br><br>Fr. LaPlante was involved in many academic endeavors for priests and he studied philosophy and theology at the Séminaire des Saints-Apôtres in Laprairie, Quebec and Seminaire St. Paul, Ottawa, Ontario.<br><br>He was ordained a priest on April 20, 1963 by Archbishop Maurice Baudoux, Archbishop of St. Boniface, Winnipeg, Manitoba. <br><br>Following his ordination, Fr. LaPlante taught philosophy and theology at the seminary of St. Boniface in Winnipeg, Manitoba and at the University of Ottawa and the University of St. Paul in Ottawa, Ontario Canada. <br><br>He was very involved in the Catholic Bishops Conference of Canada, the Health Association of Canada and the Archdiocese of Ottawa, Canada.<br><br>He was cherished by the La Pietà prayer group which he served for many years; meeting weekly in homes where members listened to scripture and celebrated liturgy.<br><br>The La Pietà prayer group, the bible study group from Our Lady of Fatima parish in Ottawa, women’s religious congregations, in particular the Sisters of the Congrégation de Notre Dame in Montréal, the Visitation Sisters and the Sisters of St. Jeanne d’Arc and many parishioners will remember Fr. LaPlante for his profound academic approach to scripture which was usually accompanied by his sense of humor … often ending his talks and discussions with CAPISH!<br><br>He was a servant priest who for 53+ years served those whom God brought to him through family, friends, LA Pieta, fellow priests, parishes, women’s religious congregations and countless students. Friends may pay respects at the Kelly Funeral Home, Carling Chapel, 2313 Carling Avenue, Ottawa, ON, K2B 7G3, 613-828-2313 on Thursday, April 20, 2017 from 6 to 9 pm. Funeral Friday to Our Lady of Fatima Church for Mass of Christian Funeral at 11 am.<br><br><br>Rest in peace, Fr.
